Sixteen and 17-year-olds considering a career in psychiatry are being invited to attend a taster event organised by Hull and East Riding’s largest provider of mental health services.
Humber NHS Foundation Trust is offering Year 12 pupils 30 places at the event, scheduled to be held on Monday 26 March, 2018 at the Learning Centre, opposite the organisation’s Willerby Hill headquarters.
Consultant Psychiatrist and College Tutor Dr Doug Ma will introduce the four-hour programme before inviting Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist Dr Stella Morris to give a talk entitled Why I became a psychiatrist.
The pupils will then split into three groups of 10 to take part in workshops which are likely to include the following:
- How to survive as a medical student and working as a foundation doctor;
- Mental health at the movies;
- Talking to patients with mental health problems (basic skills)
During the mid-session break, the pupils will be invited to enjoy refreshments while visiting stalls offering information about training, work experience and volunteering. They will also be given an opportunity to take part in a group quiz.
Medical Directorate and Medical Education Manager Gillian Hughes said
The programme is aimed at those students who are thinking of applying to medical school and who may be interested in finding out more about psychiatry and being a psychiatrist. We will provide hints and tips on medical school interviews, students will meet doctors in training and experts in psychiatry and take part in interactive workshops, and they will also gain an insight into different aspects of mental health problems and their assessment and management. It’s a fun and informative programme for which we’ve received excellent feedback in the past, and it links to our Sixth Form Medical Work Experience Programme which takes place in July and August each year.
The taster event will run from 1pm until 5pm.
Parents of pupils interested in taking part can reserve a place by phoning 01482 389152 or emailing email@example.com
